Truth and Love

Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ. Ephesians 4:15

Two things that must go together as we grow spiritually truth and love. They are the two rails on the train tracks to spiritual progress.

In all we do, we must communicate Gods truth to each other, and we must communicate truth lovingly.

For example, Zechariah 8:16 shows us the importance of speaking the truth

These are the things that you shall do: Speak the truth to one another; render in your gates judgments that are true and make for peace;

1 Corinthians 13:2 reminds us that, no matter how good we are at telling the truth, it doesnt do any good when we lack love

And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.

Love activates God's truth. When we learn how to control our tongues to always speak the truth in a loving and compassionate way weve gone a long way in growing in maturity as believers.

Some people never learn this lesson. I read about a grave marker from a cemetery in England that bore these words:

Beneath this stone,

This lump of clay,

Lies Arabella Young,

Who, on the 21st of May,

Began to hold her tongue.

Will it take death to control your tongue? I hope not!

By Gods power Jesus, who is filled with grace and truth can strengthen us to communicate with truth and love.

Consider this:

Truth without love creates irritation. When we communicate truth with a self-righteous, haughty spirit, or with no real concern for people, those who hear us will say, I dont care what you tell me, because I can tell you dont care about me.

Love without truth creates delusion. Imagine seeing that someone you love is in danger of falling over a cliff, and then telling yourself, If I warn her about the cliff, itll just scare her, or itll make me seem judge-y or alarmist. I love her too much to do that. Thats delusional thinking! Real love requires giving a warning.

"Its better to tell a truth that hurts and then heals than to tell a lie that soothes and then kills."

If you trick yourself into thinking, I love that person too much to tell him or her the truth, then you wind up being neither loving nor truthful.

Truth without love creates irritation.

Love without truth creates delusion.

But truth with love creates transformation.

God loves us enough to tell us the truth. And His truth transforms us. "Sets us free!" In the same way, God can use us to help one another grow together when we communicate the truth in love .

Have a great day and keep moving forward!
