Training Wheels

For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. Romans 8:18-19

I remember very well how it happened: my dad took a big cardboard box out of the trunk of his car. The cardboard box had the words "Sears and Roebuck" stamped on the front of it, and somewhere on the side, it said "Boy's Free Spirit Bicycle." My dad took out that bicycle, and he began to put it together, and I sat and watched as he did. Those were in the days when dads put bicycles together.

It was a red, white and blue bicycle. It had that banana seat on it and big handlebars that made it very, very wobbly for anybody to try to ride it, especially somebody who was just learning how to ride a bicycle.

My dad put the whole bicycle together, then, he put training wheels on the bike. When I got on the bicycle with the training wheels, I could ride it.  I rode it all around the patio behind our house in circles, circle after circle, pedaling that bicycle around. I loved it. I was having so much fun with that bicycle with the training wheels. I rode it with training wheels for a week and then two weeks and then three weeks.

And then one day, I came out to the patio to ride my bicycle, and there was my dad with his toolkit, and he was taking something off of that bicycle. I said, "Dad, you can't do this!"  He said, "No, I've got to."  I said, "No, Dad, I like to ride the bicycle with the training wheels.  I don't know how to ride it with just two wheels."  And he said, "Son, you've never really ridden a bicycle until you've ridden it without the training wheels." And friend, that's the truth. You've never ridden a bicycle until the training wheels are off.

God may be working in your life right now to take the training wheels off of some area of your life.  You see, there are things that we depend on sometimes, things that we lean on, things that we rely on, that if we are not careful, can keep us from walking by faith and trust in Jesus.

As God works in our lives, sometimes in ways that we don't understand or like, He may be working to remove the training wheels from our lives.

Have a great day, and keep moving forward!
