Stream of God's Blessing

Blessed is the man

who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,
nor stands in the way of sinners,

nor sits in the seat of scoffers;
but his delight is in the law of the Lord,

and on his law he meditates day and night.

Psalm 1:1-2

One summer, my family and I took a week of vacation and rented a mountain cabin in Blue Ridge, Georgia. One day, we rented three inner tubes, and then jumped in a big van, and the guy who was our guide took us about two miles up the river and let us off at a spot. We got into the cold water of the Toccoa River, and we began to tube down the river.

The biggest challenge in tubing down a river is to make sure that you stay in the main stream. If you stay where the river is flowing, you’ll have a good ride. But there are all kinds of things that can get you out of the main stream.

If you’re not careful, you can get stuck on rocks. And by the way, I think the seat of my pants polished every rock for that whole two-mile stretch. You can get caught on the rocks and you’ll stop. Or, you can get stuck in a little eddy that is outside of the main stream, and you’ll stall. Or, you can get caught up in a place on the bank where you just can’t make any progress. But the river is always flowing, and as long as you are in the stream of that river, you will go where you need to go.

And in a very real way, that is similar to the blessing of God. God’s river of blessing never stops flowing.  God is always blessing. God is always making His blessing available to His people. The question is, are we living our lives in such a way that we are in the main stream of His blessing?

When we come to God’s Word, we’re not just reading a verse a day to keep the Devil away, and we’re not just trying to get through some program that we’ve set out for ourselves. Instead, we are endeavoring to take God’s Word and bring it into our hearts, meditating on it day and night. The man that is in the stream of God’s blessing is the man who delights in the Word of God.

Have a great day, and keep moving forward!
