Straining at the Leash

Nearly every day, our little Yorkshire terrier, Joey, goes with us on a walk around our neighborhood. Though he weighs a shade less than 5 pounds and his tiny legs require perhaps thousands of steps to keep up with us, he makes the walk with gusto. It’s the highlight of his doggie day!

Often, Joey gets distracted along his journey. He sees another dog or smells an interesting smell or hears something that fascinates him. When those things happen, his eyes light up, his ears fold back, and his legs begin to spin like whirligigs as he starts after whatever has captured his attention.

That’s why we walk Joey with a leash. With leash in hand, we always have the ability to correct him when he gets sidetracked and put him back on the path.

Proverbs 16:9 says:

The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.

While we may plan our course of actions, it is the Lord who orders our steps. He determines how our plans will work out, and only those plans that He has approved for our lives will ultimately succeed. We can praise the Lord that He always holds the leash of our lives in His sovereign hands, protecting us from foolish choices and diversions as we follow Him.

Today, don’t strain at the directing hand of God on your life. Trust Him, listen to Him, and obey Him. His paths are always the best.

Have a great day, and keep moving forward!
