Rest for the Weary

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30)

Once there was a man who had a very well trained Labrador Retriever. The dog loved the water. One day the dog was playing happily in a nearby lake. When it was time to go home, the man called the dog, but the Lab would not come. The man called the dog over and over. The dog acted like he did not even hear a word. The dog would just not obey. Finally the man got a stick and threw it out in the water. When the dog saw the stick, he swam over. The dog got the stick and came back and laid it at his master’s feet.

Have you ever felt as if God has thrown you a “stick”- a broken relationship, the death of a loved one, an illness, a job loss, etc.? God does not cause pain, but He allows it. It may be that God has allowed the burden in your life because He can’t get your attention. It may be that God has given you a burden so you might come and lay it at your Master’s feet.

Sometimes when our heart is aching and breaking, we realize who we really need in our lives to meet our deep need. Only Jesus can take our burdens and sorrows and provide the love, comfort, and peace we need.

God’s Word shows us that Jesus wants us to come to Him with our burdens and He will give us the rest and peace we need. Jesus provides the rest and gentle calm our souls really desire.

Jesus understands when we are exhausted beyond belief and need a quiet place of rest. We find the rest and strength we need by coming to Jesus in prayer and Bible study. His presence lifts the burden off our shoulders.

Have a great day and keep moving forward!
