Put on Your Armor!
“… So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light. Let us walk properly as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and sensuality, not in quarreling and jealousy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.” Romans 13:12-14
In ancient times, Centurions in the mighty Roman army conducted morning inspections of their troops. As he stood in front of each soldier, the soldier struck with his right fist the breastplate intended to protect his heart from sword and arrow. The Centurion listened for two things as the soldier struck his own breastplate. First, he listened for the soldier’s shout, “Integritas!” indicating his armor was complete. Then, he listened for the distinct ringing sound that would be produced as his fist struck the armor. Satisfied that this soldier was well protected, he moved on to the rest of the men for inspection.
As centuries passed, Roman armies grew weary of wearing the heavy armor. They eventually set aside the breastplates, and then, their helmets. Inevitably, the Roman soldiers became vulnerable to the attacks of the enemy archers and swordsmen. Without full armor to protect their soldiers, the Roman armies were weakened and became unable to withstand the onslaught of their enemies.
Every day, you are in a battle. God has given you armor to protect your heart: the breastplate of righteousness. Today, ask God to help you live a life that is proper in all ways by seeking to please Him, rather than gratifying your own desires. Then your heart will be protected, and you will be able to withstand the arrows of the enemy!
Have a great day, and keep moving forward!
