New Purity

Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? We were buried therefore with Him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with Him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with Him in a resurrection like His. Romans 6:3-5

Ben and his wife were celebrating their wedding anniversary. They had plans to go out for dinner that night, and they went shopping in the afternoon.

Ben took his wife to this little dress shop, a very expensive shop.  She began to try on dresses. She came out of the dressing room with this beautiful white dress on, gorgeous. It fit her perfectly. It didn’t need to be taken in, didn’t need to be altered. Everything was just right, but it was expensive. In fact, it was more expensive than her wedding dress had been.

Ben said, “Honey, get it.” And she said, “Oh, I can’t get this.”

“Yes, you get it,” he said. “It fits you and it looks beautiful on you. Wear it tonight when we go out to dinner.”

So she bought it.

At home she put it on and they went out to the restaurant. They had a wonderful dinner. Then dessert time came, and she ordered cherry pie. You know what happened next. Her cherry pie – all over the front of that white dress, she spilt her cherry pie. She was heartbroken.

The next day she took the dress to the dry cleaner. The dry cleaner looked at it and said, “This is going to be hard but I’ll do everything I can do, I’ll work on it.”

When she came back a couple days later to pick up the dress, the dry cleaner said, “I worked as hard as I could work on it. You can barely see the stain, it’s almost gone.”

You know what she did with that expensive dress? She took it home and hung it up in the closet, and she never wore it again.

Sometimes we insist, even as believers in Jesus Christ, on going back to the closet and getting out the filthy, stained garments of who we used to be, and putting those things back on again.

Jesus said you don’t have to do that; you don’t need to do that. Jesus died on the cross to pay the price for that and to forgive you of that sin. And He will deliver you from that sin.

Jesus calls us to live with a new purity, to put to death those things that displease him, and then to come alive to live a new life in Jesus Christ.

Have a great day, and keep moving forward!
