Letting Go of the Trivial
“… And Jesus said to Simon, 'Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.' And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed Him.” Luke 5:10-11
During a flood in the hill country of Texas many years ago, a woman lost her life when she became separated from her family, who had formed a human chain to help each other through the water until they could climb together to safety. She clung tightly to her purse, which contained her insurance documents. Thinking that those papers were the most important thing to her at the time, and not being willing to let go of them to hold on to her daughter’s hand, she was washed away. She failed to recognize the difference between the vital and the trivial, and it cost her life.
Following Jesus causes us to have a whole new system of priorities. The Bible says that the fisherman Jesus called to be His followers left everything and followed Him. They walked away from what had seemed important before, and they followed Jesus with urgency. They left their fathers, they left their family business, and they left the world’s expectations to follow Jesus. All they had once held dear was now of secondary importance. Their new priority was to follow the Master.
Are you grasping tightly to something that keeps you from being a whole-hearted follower of Jesus? The worldly things we cling to now will one day be swept away! Ask God to help you let them go, and hold tightly to the hand of Jesus.
Have a great day and keep moving forward!
