When I was learning to ride a bicycle, I was afraid anytime I rode past a storm drain on the road. I would see the storm drain, shout out, "drain hole! drain hole!”
and swerve out into the middle of the road.
In my 5-year-old mind, my greatest fear was falling into one of those drain holes.
Finally, my father stopped me. He pulled me aside, got me off my bike and took me over to one of those storm drains. "Now, I want you to go down into that drain
I tried. I couldn't do it. I couldn't even get one of my legs to go into that storm drain.
"Stephen, you won't fall into that storm drain. You couldn't do it if you tried. You can't make yourself go in there. That's nothing to be scared about."
Then, as we stood on the side of the road, watching the cars go by, my dad said, "You see those cars and trucks? Every time you try to miss a drain hole, you're
swerving out where those cars and trucks are. They can run you over. They can kill you".
My basic problem as a 5-year-old: I was confused about what I should fear.
Jesus said in Matthew 10:28
“And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who
can destroy both soul and body in hell.”
One of the greatest Christians I have ever known who has been used of God to make a difference for Christ all over the world and who has made a brave and courageous
stand for God's word once told me:
"I've never done anything that courageous. In fact, anything I've done has been motivated by fear. Every day I am afraid of disobeying God."
Have a great day, and keep moving forward!
