Display or Service?

As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace: (1 Peter 4:10)

Years ago, a body builder was the guest on a television talk show.

During the interview, the host asked, “Why do you develop those particular muscles?”

The body builder simply stepped forward and flexed. His muscles rippled from his chest to his calves. The audience applauded.

“So, what do you use all those muscles for?” the host asked.

Again, the muscleman flexed, and his biceps and triceps exploded to impressive proportions. Again, the audience cheered.

And, again, the host asked, “But what do you use those muscles for?”

The body builder had no answer. His only response was to continue to display his well-developed body.

Every gift we have and every discipline we develop are all meant to help us serve in God’s kingdom and build His church.

Prayer, reading God’s Word, learning to share our faith, fasting, and other spiritual disciplines are never ends unto themselves. Neither are our spiritual gifts.

They’re not intended merely for display, but for use.

Are you using the gifts God has given you to bless others and to serve Christ?

Have a great day, and keep moving forward!
