Completely Ineffective

And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God that you may know that you have eternal life. 1 John 5:11-13

When I was in ninth grade, my dad built a garage. He enlisted my help along the way. I helped him dig foundations and I helped him put up the walls. And then it came time to put on the roof.

He said, "Son, get on that ladder; come on up here.  I want you to help me put on these shingles."  When I got up on the roof, he said, "Son, get me some nails."  Ten minutes later, he said, "Son, where are those nails?"  He then looked and realized that I had not moved from the place I was when he had originally asked me to get the nails.

I discovered something when I was up on that roof.  I discovered that I don't like to be up on roofs.  Now, my problem was not being on the roof; my problem was I was afraid of falling off the roof.

I could not do anything that my father wanted me to do because I kept thinking every time I moved, I was going to fall. Because of that fear, I was completely ineffective.

The Bible says that God wants you to know that you have eternal life. Until you have that assurance that you know, that you know, that you know that you have eternal lifeā€¦ until you know for certain, you really won't be effective as a Christian because you'll always be worried: "Well, am I okay?"  And then you won't share your faith with others.

Jesus says that you can know, that you can be certain.  Eternal life is God's gift.  Eternal life comes from Jesus alone, and you can be certain that you have it.

Have a great day, and keep moving forward!
