Christ Crucified

“And I, when I came to you, brothers, did not come proclaiming to you the testimony of God with lofty speech or wisdom. For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified. And I was with you in weakness and in fear and much trembling,  and my speech and my message were not in plausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, so that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.” 1 Corinthians 2:1-5

The story is told of a tiny English chapel whose stone walls were covered by ivy. On an arch were inscribed the words: WE PREACH CHRIST CRUCIFIED. And for many years, godly men preached Christ crucified.

Over time, the ivy spread and hid the last word of the inscription, so that it read only WE PREACH CHRIST. Other men came and they did preach Christ:  Christ the example, Christ the humanitarian, Christ the ideal teacher.

The ivy continued to grow until finally, the only remaining visible part of the inscription read:  WE PREACH. The next generations did preach.  They preached economics, a social gospel, book reviews -  everything except Christ crucified.

Men will always be tempted to build a church on something other than Jesus Christ, and Him crucified.

It's easier, safer, and less offensive to the world to build a church on something else. But a church built on anything other than the full gospel – Christ crucified for the sins of man - is not a true church.  Faith built upon the wisdom of men will not stand up over time, but faith in the crucified and resurrected Christ will stand for eternity!  That is the only message worth preaching.

Today, thank God for your church, and pray for your church to stand firm upon the foundation of Christ, and Him crucified!

Have a great day, and keep moving forward!
